What does home mean to me?Home is the place to be! When you live on your own, your house is your space, your domain. It is your sanctuary, your retreat. Home is where you’re the most comfortable, you’re the king of you palace and answer to no one.

It takes on a whole new meaning when you move from your parent’s house. Definitely more appreciated since everything there requires you to pay the bill when it arrives for it, so it humbles you in a way.

But with that said, home also means my parents house. The house that I grew up in will always feel like home I suppose, until I establish a family one day and create their definition of home.

I feel like when I move out to Sacramento for school, home will once again, take on a new meaning. Stockton will soon become home, and the new place in Sac will be home as well. I think no matter what location home may be, it will always have that feeling of completeness, and sense of warmth that only home brings. In Joan Didion’s essay on Going Home, Didion expresses her feelings on the definition of “home”. Throughout the story, Didion recalls going to and staying at her parent’s house. Even though Didion lives in her own home with her daughter and husband, being home makes her feel a feeling only brought by her childhood home.

I get the impression that Didion feels like the feeling that home brings her is lost is today’s culture and questions whether or not products of today’s society can view “home” the same.“And yet some nameless anxiety colored the emotional charges between me and the place that I came from”. Didion writes. Memories around each corner seem to cause Didion to have a hard time being at home. She says that even at thirty, she couldn’t carry a phone conversation without crying after hanging up. She was home for her daughters birthday and had this to say, “would like to give her home for her birthday, but we live differently now and I can promise her nothing like that.” Didion feels like in today’s society, the word home, the place or house you came from, unfortunately has less value then someone her age.In conclusion I feel like Didion has a good opinion based on today’s society, but shouldn’t assume one may not grow in today’s culture based on it. I believe that the morals and values of what home is, is established by ones parents. A good family life is important to have because it reflects on how children will grow up and most likely act.

So as long as today’s parents do all they can to provide a loving, safe, and warm place to be called home then they’ve done their part I believe.
